Christmas Movie Line Up

So it’s December.  In our household that means one very important thing.  All our TV shows will either go on hiatus or get relegated to the DVR so that we can get in our full annual holiday lineup.  Here’s our list.

  1. The Grinch (Jim Carrey version)
  2. The Santa Clause (my hubby’s favorite)
  3. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (the original Burl Ives version, none of this computer animated crap)
  4. Frosty the Snowman
  5. Garfield Christmas special
  6. A Charlie Brown Christmas
  7. A Christmas Carol (also Jim Carrey–this is a new one in our canon, since no one but me wants to have an out loud reading of the real Dickens novel)
  8. The Polar Express
  9. White Christmas (MY all time favorite)

There are two or three others we reeled off the other night, but I forget right now what they were.   We are not It’s A Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street fans.  And don’t even get me started on A Christmas Story, the worst Christmas movie ever made–a whole movie about psychological child abuse…

What’s on YOUR list of must watch Christmas movies?

  1. It’s funny that you mentioned those three movies you don’t watch. I’ve never watched any of those all the way through. I tried to watch It’s a Wonderful Life, but when he lost that money, I was so upset I couldn’t continue. LOL. My favorite Christmas movie by far is The Christmas Card. And I like several of the different renditions of A Christmas Carol, although the George C. Scott version is probably my favorite. And I like the Patrick Stuart version, too.

I like most of those you listed. I agree that the original Rudolph is the best. I love it so much that my son bought it for me one Christmas. My husband can’t watch The Polar Express. The computer generated characters creep him out. LOL

  2. Out of the typical Christmas movies there are, the ones we make sure to watch are It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Elf. But I’ve always been one to watch the movies that aren’t looked at as Christmas movies, but take place during Christmas. That list is fairly long: Gremlins, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon, The Ref, Batman Returns, Grumpy Old Men, Just Friends (a recent addition to the collection) and – of course – Die Hard.

  3. Must not… Must restrain… Crap!
The song White Christmas actually debuted in the movie Holiday Inn (that also stars Bing and Fred). It is because of the success of that song that the movie White Christmas exists. I spent my teens watching AMC. Sorry, but every time someone mentions one I have to show the connection with the other.

    1. Holiday Inn is another of my faves, though not one of hubby’s, so it’s not a regular part of the line up. My grandfather once had dinner with Bing Crosby and his wife!

      1. Holiday Inn is one of my all time faves, but my husband is not so into musicals. I’m jealy of that dinner your grandfather had! Though, I probably wasn’t born when it happened or if I was I was not old enough to enjoy it.

  4. Holiday Inn is a favorite for me. (When Lila picks up Jim’s pipe at the end), Lethal Weapon (“Riggs, if you think I’m going to eat the world’s lousiest Christmas turkey by myself, you’re crazy”), Muppet Christmas Carol (“no cheeses for us meeces”), the Buffy “Amends” episode (“Am I thing worth saving?”), Barbie in the Nutcracker (“I love you,” Eric chokes out as Clara fades from his world).

I wonder if there’s a good Firefly Christmas fanfiction episode out there somewhere…

  5. “A Christmas Story” is actually one of my favorites, as is the original “Miracle 34th Street.”

Some of my others: “Holiday Inn,” “Christmas in Connecticut,” “Home Alone” (was filmed in the northern suburbs of Chicago; the church was my grandfather’s parish church), “Die Hard” (“Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho.”) and “The Bishop’s Wife” (has the most beautiful Christmas sermon I’ve heard).

  6. I had a conversation a couple of days ago about the best Christmas movies. This friend couldn’t believe I’d never seen A Christmas Story since it’s a “classic.” I can never seem to get interested in a boy and a BB gun for this holiday. What am I missing?

As to my faves, It’s A Wonderful Life is on my list–along with White Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, The Grinch, A Year Without Santa Claus, and of course, Die Hard.
