Monday Miscellaney

My butt is DRAGGING this morning.  Woke up in the wee hours from a truly horrific nightmare about Daisy.  She was very confused why I was checking her for injuries at 2 in the morning.  It was bad.  To the point I nearly spent the rest of the night on the floor by HER bed, just so I could touch her.

It’s raining today.  AGAIN.  I’m so damned tired of rain.

Since I’m kind of short on genius this morning, I thought I’d do a quick roundup of posts I think are worth reading:

From James Scott Bell, a post about How to Work On More Than One Book At A Time.  Always something I’m interested in.  As it happens my process is very similar to what he describes here.  I’m constantly herding plot bunnies by making notes on stuff in different stages, though possibly I don’t always put the production of new words as the number one priority that it needs to be.

Counter to that, I read a great post yesterday on how we all need to stop focusing on performance and start focusing on experience.  Given I’m very performance oriented, this isn’t something I readily do, but it’s worth trying.

In Justine Musk’s newsletter today, she makes the comment that

My friend + writing coach, Rachel Resnick, recommends that you choose ‘guardian books’ for your writing project: a book you admire + resonate with + can use in some way as a guide.

I think this is an awesome idea.  I haven’t got the foggiest idea what guardian books I might choose, but it’s something I’d like to be on the lookout for.  They would be, I suppose, stories that are sticky.  That we keep coming back to, keep thinking about.  And I would imagine that to an extent, they might change depending on what you need from project to project.  I do have some guardian books for life in general, books I feel the need to reread every year or two because they ground me.  I like the idea of applying that concept to my writing.

Hope your Monday goes well.  I’m going to be dreaming of a nap the rest of mine.
