T Minus Four Days…

So I am HOME from DFW and have immediately slid into the anxiety ridden panic that attends moving.  Not because I don’t have a plan, but because I have–erm–issues with having stuff in boxes, not in place, and otherwise general chaos. Which is why I’m so damned efficient at it.  I CAN’T TAKE IT, Y’ALL!

:twitch twitch:

Hubs is angsting because he wasn’t able to get off work until Thursday afternoon to help with stuff.  But it’ll be fine.  After the epic social interactions of DFW (which were, you guessed it, AWESOME), this introvert is actually quite happy to be spending the next couple of days in quiet by myself.

The plan for today is to go get fresh paint, pick up new drop cloths, and pull down all the nails and hangers, spackle and touch up walls, and then paint the former nursery (gonna be my gym) and the top half of the two tone library (so that it’s all one tone).  And between all that, get all the utilities set up, and start hauling over everything that already normally lives in a decorative box, chest, or basket.  Of course, all of this is after I take Daisy to PT here in the next little bit.

Oh hey!  And check it, I’ve got a 10% of coupon at Lowes I can use on the blinds I need to buy.  Sweet.

BTW, if you are a big fan of a laugh, you will LOVE Tawna Fenske’s work.  You can have a shot at her latest in a giveaway over at Jessica Corra’s blog.  I missed it while I was out of town, and it CLOSES TONIGHT, so get your entries in TODAY!

Sunday Summary: DFWCon

So I’m sitting here in the sprawling king size bed of my hotel room, in my happy little pillow cave, turning on my computer for the first time since Friday morning.  Other than using Twitter on my phone to track folks down at the conference, I have been unplugged all weekend.  It was a strange and liberating sensation, not so much to be unplugged, but to be unplugged because all the people I talk to all the time were HERE.

I cannot describe to you the awesome of getting to meet my agent, the Magnificent Laurie McLean, in person.  (Yes, she’s totally hilarious IRL).  I got to meet my agentmate, Victoria Scott (so fun!).  I got to hang with all the WANA peeps–Kristen Lamb (who totally has a Presence, despite not being any taller than I am), Piper Bayard, Donna Lawson (who has, I think, decided I am a total lunatic and thinks that’s awesome), Tiffany White, Jillian Dodd, David Walker, Nigel Blackwell, Julie Glover, and Jess Witkins.  I finally got to see the darling Kendra Highley (who introduced me to Abuelos…omg, best strawberry margarita EVER).  I met all kinds of awesome new peeps (half of whom I forgot to get cards from, so I hope they all track me down on Twitter), including Jean Leggett (comedianne extraordinaire), Meredith Barnes (former agent turned marketing director for SoHo Press, who totally has her finger on the pulse of the future of publishing), Cheryl Ammeter (hoot an a half and also believes in kick ass female leads), Matt DeVaney, Sean Fletcher, M.A. Legvold (who has a beautiful smile), K. S. Bartow, J. L. Glenn, Sidney Bristol (of the adorable red shoes), Suzan Butler and a whole boatload of other fabulous fabulous people.  Oh, and I nearly wound up in James Rollins (yeah THAT James Rollins) lap.  But you gotta buy me a drink to get that story. :D

OMG, y’all, this was the most fun you can legally have in six states. At least if you’re a writer.  To be surrounded by a few hundred people who ACTUALLY GET ME…I can’t describe how amazing that was.  I have done very little sleeping, a whole crapton of socializing, and have just been immersed in this primordial pool of creative juices.

This conference was my jump in to the deep end experiment to get over my fear of public speaking (I was on two panels–one on the Anatomy of a Book Launch and the other on Choosing To Self Publish).  And I discovered an amazing thing: If you actually know what you’re talking about (and I don’t mean just have all the facts memorized like I used to do for debate in high school, but really KNOW), it’s not scary!  I wasn’t nervous at all.  It was…you know, I know I need to pick another adjective besides “Awesome” but right now I’m running on a lot of sugar and caffeine and very little sleep, so that’s what I’ve got.

I’m totally bummed that it’s over, as I can’t remember when I’ve ever had this much fun in my adult life.  But there will be next year, and now I get to put all my attention on MOVING TO THE NEW HOUSE.  I imagine I will do some blogging this week, but there’s probably going to be some days I’m AWOL until we get the internet sorted out and set up.

See you on the flip side!

One More Day!

T minus less than 24 hours until I leave for Dallas!  Whee!  So excited!

I’ve got my schedule printed out with all the classes I want to attend marked off, as well as the two panels I’m on.  I’ve got social plans from pretty much the moment I hit town to the moment I leave and I’m SO EXCITED.  Though, given I’m an introvert, I’ll probably be happy to quietly move stuff by myself while hubby is at work for the 3 days before closing next week.

Looking at the schedule of events and such at the conference, I’m really surprised at how much of conferencing is around new writers (well perhaps they are not all new writers) looking for representation.  Giving pitches to agents, taking classes about pitches and queries and…all manner of stuff that just sounds kind of stressful.

I am so glad I don’t have to do that.  Because I’d be so nervous I’d probably barf on a prospective agent’s shoes and that just wouldn’t be good for anybody involved.  I’m really excited that I can just go, learn stuff, meet people, and generally wallow in an environment of rampant creative awesome.

I’ve got audiobooks queued up (currently Frank Beddor’s Seeing Redd, second book in The Looking Glass Wars and following up with Nalini Singh’s Play of Passion, which will FINALLY get me up to book 10 and Hawk and Sienna’s story), healthy snacks bought for the drive, all the relevant addresses entered into my GPS, my car gassed up and clean, and my loins generally girded for awesome.

763 words to go to make my goal for the month.
