WIP Clip Wednesday

This is a scene from House of Cards. The hero and heroine are old flames that ended badly and have wound up in the same place more than a decade later. They have a LOT of history. As a general note, the hero always calls the heroine by her middle name Grace, but she goes by Kensie.

She sighed. “Well if we’re going for honesty…You scare me, Collin.”

“Scare you? But I’d never…”

Kensie waved her hand dismissively. “Oh, not in any physical sort of way. I know you better than that. It’s just…I convinced myself that I was over you. I was certain of it. And now here you are, after all these years claiming you still care about me. I’m just…I’m afraid of what you pull from me. I can’t seem to get any sort of handle on my emotions when you’re around. Never could. I always felt too much for you. And I don’t know how much of it is real and how much of it is simply unresolved from before.”

“Isn’t it worth finding out?” he asked, taking her hand again and drawing her down to the blanket next to him. “No time like the present to clarify what’s past and what’s now.”

“What are you doing?”

“An experiment. We try this out, you and me, for a while. If it turns out that you just need resolution on us from before, then it’s my loss. No harm, no foul to you and at least we’ll know and can both move on with our lives.”

“And if it doesn’t?”

“Then count me the happiest man in Wyoming.”

Resolution. Ten years ago, even five, Kensie would have given anything to be free of him completely. For he had been the unfortunate standard against which all other potential relationships had been measured and found wanting. No realistic relationship could or had held up to the heady insanity of that first love. Logically she’d always known that. But no matter how good her intentions to look at each new relationship on its own merit, he had always been in the back of her mind. And she’d always thought she’d never know.

Yes, resolution was an attractive option, indeed.

“Why do I hate it when you start to sound reasonable?”

Collin chuckled. “Because you’d rather it was your idea.” He wrapped an arm around her waist and brought her body snug against his. She was very aware of the two thin layers of denim separating flesh from flesh. “C’mon, it’s in the name of science. Kiss me, Grace.”

“It’s Kensie,” she muttered.

She expected him to close the little distance between them, but he didn’t. One hand rubbed slow circles on her back as he waited. His eyes seemed to deepen, darken with awareness and arousal.

“Your choice, Angel,” he whispered, so near his breath seemed to tease her lips.

Her choice. To kiss him and actively ignore every logical thought she’d had on the subject from the minute she’d seen him standing in her room.

“This is completely irrational,” she murmured, steadily holding his gaze as her body heated in response to proximity and memory.

“Since when was anything about us ever rational?”

Kensie felt the warmth of his breath on her face again as he spoke and trembled.

Inevitable. Surely this was completely inevitable. If not today, then in a week or a month. Her head couldn’t hold out against her heart and body forever. Consequences be damned. She had been, the moment he walked back into her life.
