Smattering

Because I am at a loss for a particularly cohesive topic today I thought I’d do a list.

  1. Unless you are writing Victorian fiction, it is NOT okay to use the phrase “panty-clad bottom” in a love scene.  The contemporary paranormal I’m reading now did, and now I can’t possibly take the rest of this book seriously.
  2. Second, remember that in a romance you must SHOW the characters falling in love.  You can’t just tell the reader “Oh, flighty heroine just realized she was madly in love with him, even though twenty pages ago she thought he was a lunatic who was trying to kill her,” and expect it to be okay.
  3. I am contemplating Shadows of the Past as the working title for the novella.  I’m not thrilled with it, but it sort of fits with my amnesiac hero and the Shadow Walkers and it’s something to call it besides “the novella”.
  4. I received a lovely and gracious (and unnecessary) apology from Jaye Patrick for dismissing my Pantser to Plotter series without reading the whole thing.  Evidently he’s hit that Dark Period with his manuscript where he’s willing to give anything a try.
  5. If you have not already checked it out, hop on over to Storyfix to see the 11 part series on story structure.  Larry has really outdone himself, and the series is well worth a read.  I totally printed it out and took notes.
  6. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Classic Regency Romance – Now with Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem! I really can’t decide if I’m amused or horrified.  Those of you who’ve read it, weigh in.
  7. All of my squash and zucchini plants have been decimated by squash bugs.  The little varmints should be eradicated from the face of the earth.  I am in mourning and trying to figure out when I can plant winter vegetables in Mississippi.
  8. On the upside, my tomato plant is doing beautifully.
  9. PBW shared this fabulous link yesterday.  It’s a random image generator from Flickr images based on keyword, etc.
  10. Remember how I was bemoaning the lack of an iPhone app where in I could enter my hubby’s to do list somewhere online and have it pop up on his phone to remind him to do stuff, so that I don’t have to?  Such a beast exists.  ReQall was just what the doctor ordered.  We shall try the maiden voyage today.

  1. I found your Pantser to Plotter series over the weekend and love it! Thanks so much. And I’m ecstatic to meet another person who perhaps detests squash bugs as much as I do. My sister says she’ll humanely get rid of the ones starting to creep into her garden. I told her I’d gleefully go over and squish them, since they’ve won the war at my house. (Hate them!) Next year I’m planting marigolds all around my plants, since I’ve been told by multiple sources that squash bugs hate marigolds.

    1. Marigolds? Really? Okay I need to make a note of that because I hate those little SOBs. I had a healthy crop of more than a dozen plants and the squash bugs decimated them all in FOUR DAYS.

Glad you enjoyed the P2P series 🙂

  2. Um… Kait? Thank you for accepting my apology, but I have teensy, weensy, little problem… I don’t have any dangly bits.

Having said that, dangly bits author Simon Haynes’ ywriter is working well so far. I think it’s an excellent tool for plotters and for organising the work for organic writer. It demands a writer answer questions for each chapter and character, focuses the writer’s mind quite eloquently. Thanks for the heads-up on the software.
