So I am in mourning. The Book Rack, my favorite used bookstore in my hometown, is closing. I has a serious sad. This place has been around since before I was born, and it always had a fantastic selection of whatever genre I was in the mood for at the time. I stopped in every time I went home to visit my mom, always trading in what I’d already read and picking up more. They’re selling their entire stock of paperbacks for $1, so of course I picked up several.
- The Accidental Demon Slayer by Angie Fox
- A Tale of Two Demon Slayer by Angie Fox
- Witch Craft by Caitlin Kittredge
- Devil May Care by Elizabeth Peters
- Die For Love by Elizabeth Peters
- Grounds for Murder by Sandra Balzo
- Eggs in Purgatory by Laura Childs
- The Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix
- The Diva Takes the Cake by Krista Davis
- Killer Pancake by Diane Mott Davidson
- Evil Without A Face by Jordan Dane
- The Wrong Side of Dead by Jordan Dane
- Witch Fire by Anya Bast
- Witch Blood by Anya Bast
- Witch Heart by Anya Bast
- Witch Fury by Anya Bast
Of course, if they’re closed, then at least I might stop bringing home so many books faster than I can read them. I’ve got a ridiculous backlog of paperbacks that I have hardly touched since I got my Nook. I definitely need to work on making inroads in all of them over the next couple of years. I know most won’t be going on the keeper shelf, so I might as well get through them and trade them in at the OTHER used bookstore. And I can hang on to the ones in really good shape to take to Half Priced Books next time I’m in a city that has one. It’d be really awesome if I could trade them in for credit toward ebooks…

Is this the Book Rack in Bloomington, IN? That’s a tragedy.
No, I live in Mississippi.
I think more and more bookstores are going away. Maybe due to the popularity of ebooks.
I didn’t know you liked Diane Mott Davidson. I love her books because there’s murder and food all mixed together. That sounded wrong somehow….
The Book Rack is a franchise. Only one is closing down, not the rest in the US. This got me concerned because there are two within 30 min from my house and I have been in early negotiations to start a new store.
Kait, I’m sorry to hear yet another small business is closing. I don’t go to my local used book store because their prices are too high for used books 🙁 I get most of my used books from swapping sites, like http://www.swap.com and http://www.paperbackswap.com, and those sites are a great way to get rid of books you have if you don’t have a local store.
Yeah I’ve used both Paperbackswap and Bookmooch on occasion, but they don’t much work for me because they NEVER have the books that I want (people don’t seem to get RID of paranormal romance). So I’ll just save them up as I read them and go trade them in when I hit a bigger city.
I feel your pain – my wish list tends to sit for awhile! I have 19 credits on Paperback Swap right now. Part of the reason is that if I can get a book at the library, I tend not to put it on my wish list. If I ever get around to reading my collection of books, I’ll have lots of PNR books listed!
