Sunday Summary

  1. I was a total waste of oxygen yesterday.  Didn’t get a thing written or actively plotted.  Opening up the WIP just made me close it again because I had no idea what to do with it.  Same reaction this morning, which led me to the conclusion that’s been circling around my head for the last six weeks.  I need a better plot for this book.
  2. I’ve been brainstorming with Susan for the last couple of hours, working on figuring out a more active and involved plot.  I went back to Devil’s Eye and traced several plot problems (as in conflicts remaining from that story, not actual problems with the plot) from there, logically forward a few weeks, which is where Devil’s Snare takes place.  And I realized something huge about my Big Bad which I’d forgotten about that should help.  The end result?  I’m about to open up a case of C4 on my outline.  But that’s okay.  I’m only a scene and a half into the book, and I’d rather fix this NOW than keep on floundering for several chapters and continue to have it be complete and utter shite.
  3. The week wasn’t a total loss on getting back in the groove anyway.  My goal was 500 words a day, and I did write 5 of 6 days for a total of 2747 words, just shy of 500 a day.  Considering the total bleh of an outline I was working from, I’m satisfied with that.  Even though half of that won’t be staying.  It’s words and getting back into routine, and that’s important.
  4. After yesterday’s DIY marathon on TV, I got all motivated to finish some things.  I had hubs get down the mitre saw and I FINALLY cut the moulding I bought FIVE YEARS AGO to frame out the bathroom mirror.  Painted it.  Hung it this morning.  So we went from this:

    To this:
I also picked up some ribbon this morning to use on a window treatment I have planned to go over the window above the kitchen sink.  I got the fabric a month or so ago and hadn’t been able to decide what I wanted, but then I found a really cute idea for an easy curtain on BHG.com.  Once hubs gets back from golfing this afternoon, I may pull out my sewing machine and put that together.  Shouldn’t take more than an hour.  I also picked up some of that spray on with the garden hose window cleaner and some pro bleach stuff for the side of the house.  Maybe I should watch DIY TV more often.
  5. For the immediate future, I’m changing my Round 4 goal.  It is imperative that I get my plot sorted out before I write much more, so that’s my focus this week.  I’d like to have my plot mostly finalized by next Sunday.
  6. I’m looking for a ROWbuddy with writing goals, who hangs out on Twitter, and is available for writing sprints in the vicinity of 5-7 PM Central time.  I write paranormal romance/urban fantasy if that matters.

  1. I hear ya on getting the plot down before getting any more writing done! My novel writing process regularly includes trashing the first attempt and starting over from scratch, argh.

The writing sprints sound like fun, but that would be the middle of the night here in central Europe, and I’m in shape for sprinting at that time. :/

Have a great week and keep up the good work! 🙂

  2. Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog! And thanks for even reading my blog!!! I feel like I’ve just shaken hands with someone famous. 🙂

I very much wish I could be your Twitter pal, but I’m not in any kind of shape to do writing sprints. Boo on me. Maybe next round — maybe I will be ready by January.

Good job meeting your goals! And thanks for creating this awesome writing challenge. I’m loving the ROW.

  3. You had me on “I was a total waste of oxygen yesterday.” except I felt like that for most of last week. Luckily, I bounce back fairly well. Somehow goals and encouragement like we share here help a lot.

  4. Beautiful work on the mirror frame. Way to go!
And I think developing a solid plot you’re happy with is an excellent goal. Go for it!
    Have a wonderful week.
I hope you find the perfect writing buddy.

  5. Good luck finding a writing buddy, that sounds like a great idea! Sounds like the week was a big success — fixing the plot now is going to pay big dividends as you write a cleaner, well-constructed first draft. Revision is so hard. I love clean first drafts. 🙂

  6. Sorry Devil’s Snare is giving you so much grief. I hope once the dust clears you’ll know where you want to take the story.

It’s cool that you’ve given yourself so much to do with the house. A lot of times that’s when I get my eureka! moments.

  7. Wow, you’re crafty not only with words! The mirror looks great!
I’m also thinking of stepping back and sorting the plot of my WIP better … no way of going on without a clear path.
    Good luck!
And good luck on finding you ROWbuddy (unfortunately, I can’t write at the time you specified).
    Have great week!

  8. Kait, I’d say you’ve accomplished a lot. Finding your actual goals can be tough until you put your foot in the water. Nice start.

  9. Oooh, the moulding looks gorgeous! Glad to see that you managed to get some interior decorating projects tackled, even if the writing hasn’t proceeded the way that you wanted it to go. Hopefully once you get the plot worked out, the writing will flow much easier.

    Enjoy your week!

  10. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one that felt unproductive this weekend. Would love to be your writing buddy, But that is pretty close to my bed time and my current WIP is sci-fi.

  11. Um, I would very much like to be your writing buddy but I do not know what is really involved in that. I am on East coast and about an hour ahead of you I think… The timing is decent and I am always connected to Twitter but I feel it would be a lopsided duo. You are batman to my Robin when they just started out.

Other than that, good luck with your goals!

  12. If you can do 7-9 CDT I could do sprints with you; I’m not on ROW but I can be, since 1k1hr is too irregular for me but a scheduled time may do the trick. What wordcount are you aiming for? I’ve got a personal deadline looming and I’m about ready to do anything to get wordcount up, lol.

  13. 2747 words is awesome. You should be confident in your putline, though.
Don’t write a story that you don’t like.
I love your blog header by the way. Did you create that yourself, or did you hire an artist?

  14. Love the mirror. We have the same corner pieces in our house (but I didn’t pick them out previous owner did). I want to do a border around my much smaller mirror.

I’m with you on the plotting thing., I was at 10K and I have to toss it all because it lacks tension.
