Sunday Summary and # ROW80 Update

  1. I kinda don’t have a lot of progress to report since Wednesday.  I’ve only written 229 words.  I got all side tracked by my excitement over Sarah Wendell reading and actually LIKING Red and spent the rest of the week grinning like an idiot and going SQUEE!  But I did do a lot of world building stuff on my Mirus series and sorted out some additional plot details on my current WIP so I’m not worried about it.  Which is a refreshing change from the last couple of months.
  2. I also did a lot of reading this week.  I finished Nalini Singh’s Caressed By ice and knocked out Sarah Addison Allen’s Garden Spells in audio.  Singh is always amazing.  Her world building is unwaveringly fantastic and inspiring.  I really love the set up she’s got going in her Psy-Changeling series.  Garden Spells I had recommended to me by another friend when she heard about my kitchen witch concept.  When I read the summary, I freaked a bit.  But it was a really great example of how you can have two very similar sounding plots that are TOTALLY different in execution.  Allen’s book is a lot more Mitford meets magic.  Mine will be a lot more Diane Mott Davidson meets Katie MacAlister with a side of Paula Deen.  Either way I did enjoy it.
  3. This weekend I picked up a couple of Heather Graham books, both the classic spooky, haunted romantic suspense that she’s famous for.  It’s been ages since I’ve read something that’s just romantic suspense.  In the sense that any woo woo is of the ghosty or creepy nature rather than straight up paranormal romance with different creatures and alternate realities in the like.  Graham always delivers, so it’s just what I need to get myself firmly in the right frame of mind for my current WIP.
  4. I’m feeling all nostalgic this weekend.  We went to a wedding yesterday for one of our oldest friends, a former band mate of my husband’s.  I’ve been with my husband for twelve years, and there was this whole crew of people we’ve been friends with since college.  Over the last decade we’ve attended a LOT of weddings (ours was the first) from this circle and this was ALMOST the last.  It was so funny to all get together again and catch up.  We definitely don’t look like we did when we were 20!  Anyway, seeing our friend get married feels like coming full circle in a way.  Turns out one of the guys has moved back to town with his wife, who I REALLY liked, so we’re hoping to get together for a cookout soon.
  5. The wedding itself was held at Waverly Mansion, which is one of Mississippi’s most beautiful antebellum homes.  I’ve actually never been there and I definitely want to go back and take the proper tour.  It’ll be great inspiration for Blackbourne Hall, the antebellum home my heroine is turning into a B and B.  If I wind up self pubbing this one, I may see if I can get hubby to take some artsy shots that can be turned into a cover.
  6. Today we’re on the road to go pick up a sofa I’m inheriting from my grandmother.  She moved to assisted living earlier this year and the house finally sold, so I’m going to grab the sofa before the estate sale.  I’ll get back to writing next week.

  1. Sounds like you had a busy week. Maybe not a lot of words written but it sounds like you got a lot of things worked out and stoked the old mental fires… wait that sounds like your going crazy… um got the cogs all turning in the right direction. There, that’s better.

  2. Nalini Singh is definitely a great writer. I couldn’t get into her Psy-Changeling series, but I love the Guild Hunter series and have read every book released so far. Definitely great world building!
Love the place you attended the wedding, looks so beautiful and romantic. I get into historical settings like that. Hope you do get a chance to go back!
As for your WIP, I think we all get side-tracked occasionally. So long as you get back to it, that is what is important!

  3. Consider the reading research. I recently discovered Nalini Singh – same as susan, loved Guild Hunter series. Another writer who does great scary spooky mysteries is J.T. Ellison. Worth checking out if you like Heather Graham. Beautiful picture of the mansion – great inspiration. Have a wonderful week.

  4. Sorry I didn’t pop by on Sunday. I didn’t know to access the Linky Tool from the ROW blog. Sigh!

Anyhoo, all the best on achieving your ROW – and other – goals.

    TTFN
