Supernatural Sulking

I tried really hard to think of something brilliant and interesting to talk about today.  But it’s Monday, I feel rather lousy from lack of sleep, and I am, frankly, really really mad because last night hubs and I caught up with the current episode of Supernatural and they…Okay mega major spoiler here, so if you aren’t caught up, leave now.  Continue at your peril (or if you want to commiserate).

THEY FREAKING KILLED OFF BOBBY!  He’s one of my favorite characters on the show.  And they freaking shot him in the head. I thought for a little while there that he’d find a way to outwit the reaper, but no.

I mean, as a writer, I know all about upping the stakes and nobody being safe (though, of course, I write romance, so at least SOME characters are safe).  But Bobby?  Really?

I was all prepared for John’s deal with Old Yellow Eyes, so him dying…not a big deal.  I mean, it was, but I wasn’t all broken up about it.  Rufus wasn’t that important to me, so his death didn’t get me.  And of course when Dean and Sam respectively were in the Pit, I knew with fair Days of Our Lives certainty that they’d be back. Because, how many times have they died and come back?

But Bobby?  Damn it, I loved that old curmudgeon!

I mean, I understand that probably this is intended to be the thing that galvanizes Dean beyond this “the world is a suicide case” mentality he’s got going on.  But really, I don’t have a clear sense of the end game this season.  I’m not sure the writers have one.  They created this foe in the Leviathan that we were initially hoping was going to go back to their creature roots, but no.  They’re a weird mix of creature and sentient, conquer-the-world-masterminds that’s just not been working for me as a viewer.  They really seem to be floundering after that whole apocalypse storyline, what with the Cass becoming God for a while and all and now this.  Admittedly, it is pretty hard to one up the apocalypse, but I feel like the writers need to go back to the drawing board.

In the meantime I need to go sulk in Bobby’s honor.

  1. Supernatural lost me as a watcher earlier this year when it became obvious to me that they’d lost their way. Let me know if they get back on track. But with the death of Bobbye, that’ll be hard.

  2. I shouted at the TV and almost woke the kids when I saw what they had done. I couldn’t… and still can’t, beleive they killed Bobby. For me he was the show, he was that one thing that held it all together.

That being said Jim Beaver’s acting was first rate in that episode and his final words to Sam and Dean were more than fitting. That perfect bit of humour in a sad moment.

I agree with you on the Leviathan front. Not sure what is going on with them. I was hoping for return to the first series sort of thing. A series just filled with jobs.

  3. The hubs and I couldn’t get past the first episode of this show. The boys’ mother was killed right off the bat, and then Dean’s girlfriend is killed. I think we’re probably too sensitive, but we couldn’t watch any more vulnerable characters get killed.

    1. Actually it was Sam’s girlfriend who was killed. There was definitely a plot based reason for both her and the mother’s death, one that spans several seasons. I could accept those because we hadn’t had time to get attached to them. But I’ve had 7 seasons to love Bobby and…yeah. I’m pissed…

  4. Okay, bear with me on my wishful (and quite desperate) conspiracy theory.

It looks like Bobby is gone. There’s no more places for his memories to hide, and the reaper is at hand. What’ll it’ be, Bobby?

    1. He stays as a ghost so he can help Dean & Sam. I can’t imagine where the story is going. Yes, it’s the last season. But still, the writers are going to gave to come up with something freaking amazing to not piss off viewers after 7 seasons. Bobby as a ghost is pushing it. I hope this isn’t their direction, but suspect it is.

    2. Bobby is gone. The story moves on with Lucifer, Death, Crowley, and possibly Chuck, who we haven’t seen in ages. I hope the writers don’t write everything back to normal – AKA Chuch (God) just has it that Sam & Dean are dreaming or playing some bit part in the movies based on his books

    3. I hope THIS is the case: The reaper is really Chuck (AKA GOD). He’s going to get Bobby through this.

Yeah. I sort of laughed at the last one too, but only because I wish it were the case.
