Gluten Free Thanksgiving and New Green Kitchen

My kitchen is getting painted today.  I’m so excited.  The kitchen was yellow when we bought the house.  It’s not an unattractive yellow, but with the cabinets being this sort of golden pecan or oak color, it’s just not enough contrast for my taste.  Plus it’s the original paint from when the house was built in 2004 and it just needs repainting.  With everything off the counters and away from the walls, you can really see how beat up and scratched the walls are.  I cut a swatch of the top layer of drywall from behind the stove a couple months ago and had it color matched so that I could at least touch up where I’d patched the walls, but like all color matching, it wasn’t QUITE right.  So it’s going green.  It’s going to be fabulous.  And I think the contrast will help me like my counters better.

My brain has been full of food the last few days.  I’ve been planning my cooking schedule so that things aren’t so totally crazy on Thanksgiving day (and also because my oven will be full of an 18 pound turkey).  The dressin’ got made weekend before last and frozen.  It’ll go into the fridge to thaw tomorrow.  The turkey goes into the brine (I’m using apple cider as my base this year) tomorrow at my in laws’ house (as they have a second fridge).  Gotta make my loaf of gluten free white bread to go in various casseroles (and also to make grilled cheeses to go with the soup that’s on the menu).   And I’m trying out a new recipe for Parker House rolls.  I made my own attempt at these last year, and they weren’t bad, but they were very dry on reheating and didn’t freeze well.  I have discovered that you can absolutely never go wrong with a recipe from Jeanne at the Art of Gluten Free Baking.  Wednesday my mom is coming down and I’ll be putting together her dishes (hot pineapple salad and an asparagus casserole that I am someday making with fresh ingredients instead of all the cans) as well (she was in a wreck a few weeks back and broke her hand).  Thursday morning I’ll also be making the kolaches using Jeanne’s buttermilk biscuit recipe.  They’re an official holiday food in our house.  We are gonna eat SO GOOD this week!  And then I’ll probably hate myself until Christmas…
