Midweek #ROW80 Check-In

Well, after the disappointing end to season 2 of Hell on Wheels, I just plowed through It Had To Be You, the latest Lucky Harbor book by Jill Shalvis, which was exactly the light, fluffy, happy read I needed.  I’m listening to Flirting With Disaster by Sheryl Woods in audio while I wait for my next Audible credit so that I can FINALLY dive into Heart of Obsidian.  I still need several more HEAs to make up for Hell on Wheels.

Revision Hell is going slowly.  I’ve got 21 out of 32 scenes left to go.  I’m mostly into the scenes that require, you know, actual WORK now.  Rewriting, rearranging, etc.  I had intended to sink my teeth into that on Monday, but got laid low by a migraine straight after work and missed my writing block.  I ended up finishing plotting Act 2 of my next book later that evening, which was a pretty decent day’s work.  I DID get into the meat of things yesterday, doing some work on making my opening act more active than it was.  So…progress.  I’m steady plugging away.  I hope to knock out all the revisions to Act 1 by the end of the weekend.

I started the recording process for all my lectures yesterday.  I’d hoped to get 5 done and ended up only getting 3 because, OF COURSE, since I needed it quiet, the grounds crew decided to cut down trees outside my office.  >.<  They aren’t running quite as long as I thought, so I expect I’ll be staying after hours, when the world is gone, to record one each day a few times a week.  Once THAT’s done, then there’s editing to do, and final production and uploading and…yeah.  Stuff.

Summer semester begins tomorrow, and I finally have all my ducks in a row for both those classes.  It SHOULD run smoothly.  I hope.  But it’s the first semester where the entire university is on the new software platform for online classes, so I expect there will be a fair amount of the “but, but, it LOOKS DIFFERENT!” and “I CAN’T FIND THE BLAH DE BLAH” that’s right in front of their faces.

Anyway, I’m off to staff meeting.

I shall leave you with today’s life track, Colbie Caillat’s Bubbly–because I’m in the mood for snuggles and this song always makes me think about snuggling.

  1. I hate it when my school (I teach MS Office) changes the on-line platform! Yes, it’s necessary, but about a third of the work I do for teaching is in setting up everything my students need on-line. When the platform stays the same, all I need to do is import and tweak. When the platform changes, I have to figure out how to import, and then spend hours getting it all to make sense and look right.

Of course, they had to cut down trees outside your office RIGHT when you most needed it to be quiet! Although I like having background noise (not tree-cutting) I’ve discovered that if my background-of-choice goes silent for some reason, I don’t always notice and often end up getting more into whatever I’m working on.

  2. My school isn’t cutting down trees in front of my office – they’re digging up the street and putting huge drain pipes in, as well as widening the road. (Yes, even though we need it desperately, I hate the noise. Makes my math students edgy.)

Did you all hear about the huge sinkhole opening up in Winter Park, FL? That’s really near me. I’m hoping with all the construction near my apartment building (another bridge, widening, and pipe project) the ground doesn’t decide to give way at home!

We’re also expecting at least 4 inches of rain over the next 48 hours or so. I just keep looking at it as things I can throw in stories later.

Hope you’re having a marvelous day, Kait!

  3. Wow… I’m not the only one who was full of migraine this week… sorry to hear they kept you from revising! If Revision Hell is getting you down, you should break it up into smaller tasks. Or make a game of it. Something to keep it fun.

Good luck on the rest of the week, Kait!

  4. Good luck on the revision! It’s always worse than you think.
(Until it isn’t, and then you walk away from the story in disgust… just don’t throw it out the window :-))

  5. lots of stuff!!! Everyone else’s neck of the woods always sounds more dangerous than around here – sinkholes! I’m holding your virtual hand I’m suffering revision hell myself 🙁
best of luck with coming week 🙂

  6. Revision Hell . . . But you’re on a count down! I’m revising too. I was stuck on two scenes because my character was fainting and I KNEW she wouldn’t faint, but I couldn’t think my way around the problem. So I started working on 750words.com just freewriting and, the solution came. First a line of dialogue, what she would truly say. Then the first scene unfolded quickly. Each round of revision I do teaches me new ways to approach the problem. I feel like Imelda with 200 pairs of shoes! May school prep AND your writing go well in the coming week — and those pesky workers can just go trim trees elsewhere!
