Reading Funk

It is a truth universally acknowledged that on the day you have to fast for bloodwork at the doctor, you will wake up ready to GNAW YOUR ARM OFF.  And when you get there, you will have to wait for some ridiculous amount of time for reasons unknown, even though you were the second person through the door when they opened.  So as I was sitting there, I think I opened about 4 different books on my Kindle.

I’m about 30% through Carolyn Haines’ Them Bones (the first in her Sarah Booth Delaney mystery series set in the Mississippi Delta).  It’s funny and authentically southern (Haines is a born and raised Mississippian) but just not working for me.   So then I tried to start rereading the first Inn Boonsboro book, which I LOVED the first go round.  Couldn’t hold me.  Then I switched to Meljean Brook’s Mina Wentworth and the Invisible Citywhich I forgot I had.  It snagged me decently enough, but I got called back finally.

Oh, and this would be AFTER I went through 3 different books on my Zune on my walk this morning (because yesterday I finished Rescue My Heart).  Mary Kay Andrews’ The Fixer Upper was taking too long to get interesting.  And I just wasn’t in the mood to reread la Nora’s Midnight Bayou.  And Kresley Cole’s Poison Princess, which started interestingly enough is already losing me.

And I already started and rejected another half dozen contemporary romances recommended based on la Nora’s contemporaries from What Should I Read Next.

I am in a serious reading funk.  I don’t know WHAT I want but NOTHING is working for me.  And maybe that’s because my brain is pretty caught up in Revision Hell at the moment.  And because I’m tired and totally have the attention span of a squirrel on crack.  Last night was Boys’ Night, so hubby was out, and I was going to watch Stardust.  Ended up going to bed at 7:45.  I blamed the Benedryl, but really I think I was just that tired.  Thank GOD it’s Friday and tomorrow I can SLEEP IN.

Anybody read something awesome lately?

  1. Maybe you ought to get away from romance for awhile. Read a book that has romance, but that’s not its MAIN focus. I recently read three books in a series that I absolutely love. I don’t read too many series because my brain is all over the place, always wanting something DIFFERENT. But with this series, I’m anxiously awaiting book number four. The series is the Erin Solomon Mysteries, and the first book is called “All the Blue-Eyed Angels”. I love this series better than just about anything I’ve read recently. There is definitely a romance in these books, but it’s kind of a triangle for awhile. There’s a big mystery involved, too. I don’t know if this is your kind of thing, but they are only .99, and they’re free to borrow on Amazon Prime. I know you have a Nook, so I don’t know if it has a Kindle app.

  2. I’ve been reading Stephen King and rereading a lot of L M Montgomery, and still working my way through Gaiman’s Sandman. Speaking of which, have you read Stardust? I’d also recommend his short stories… Linda Grimes and Barbara Rogan are great authors, too!

    1. Stardust remains the ONLY book to movie conversion I can think of where I liked the movie better. I couldn’t BELIEVE he ended the book where he did. I kept checking to see if I had a defective file.

  3. I hear ya. What if you try a totally different genre. Although, I warn you. That’s my current problem. lol. I read Where’d You Go Bernadette and LOVED it right after I read a bunch of comedy memoirs that were great and two thriller novels by blogger friends that were fast paced and awesome. (Firelands by Piper Bayard and The Ruth Valley Missing by Amber West). Now, I’ve started reading The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman for my book club and I’m having a hard time getting into it. It’s incredibly well written with a good plot, but I’m just feeling sort of glum about it because everything I’ve read prior was sooo fast paced. It’s making a really good book feel like work when it shouldn’t.

Best of luck finding a good read!

  4. It sucks when even the books aren’t getting you. Hear you on revision hell – and that might be part of it. In revisions myself, all I can do is analyze the books, not enjoy them. But, maybe something completely different? Recently read “First Grave on the Right” by Darynda Jones; lots of crazy fun if you haven’t read it yet (I know, it’s been out some time). Also just enjoyed “Hounded” by Kevin Hearne – urban fantasy, and the dog is funny.

Best of luck, and hope your reading funk ends soon.

    1. I actually picked up Hounded a while back but haven’t read it yet. Loaded it on my Kindle last night, so I’m glad to hear someone else enjoyed it. I’ll give it a try!

  5. This is exactly what I am going through right now. It’s so frustrating! I’ve been starting a book and stop after a few chapters but then I pick up another book and end up doing the same thing. It also doesn’t help that most books that are being published these days have the same old storyline – bad boy, good girl, troubled pasts. It seems no one has a good childhood anymore. 😐 OK, rant over. :))
