Sesame Crusted Seared Tuna

I really don't care for tuna.  Mainly because my exposure to it has been limited to the stuff in a can which is just...blah.  But I've gotten into lots of different kind of fish this year and when I saw yellow fin tuna steaks on sale at the grocery, I picked them up.  Of course I've never made tuna steaks before, so I had no idea what to do with it.  A quick search of Food Blog Search turned up this recipe from Eclectic Recipes. I tweaked the amounts a bit as I was cooking a single tuna steak, but the end results were marvelous.
  • 1 tuna steak
  • 1 tablespoon tamari
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • white sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp canola oil
  1. Mix together the tamari, honey, sesame oil, and ground ginger.
  2. Place in a ziplock bag with the tuna steak and squish around.  Allow to marinate for 30-60 minutes.
  3. When you're ready to cook, pull the tuna steak out and dip in the sesame seeds.  Press to adhere.
  4. Heat your skillet over medium high without the oil.
  5. Add the oil and allow to heat for about 20 seconds, then add the tuna.
  6. Cook for approximately 1 minute.
  7. Flip and cook on the other side for 1 minute.
  8. Remove from heat and allow to rest for 5 minutes (this is important).
  9. Slice on the bias with a good sharp knife.
  10. Serve on a bed of fresh spinach.
