Grandma’s Condition

Just when you think you’re gonna get back in a routine…

As some of you know, there has been big family drama over the last 6 months or so, surrounding the difficult decisions accompanying my grandmother’s decline.  This has resulted in my grandmother being moved across three states to a nursing home (is there something between assisted living and a nursing home?  ‘Cause they’re not actually a nursing home…) about a month ago, my uncle (who’d lived with my grandmother and cared for her until this decline) also moving across three states and temporarily in with my mother until he finds a job over here (which is what we were helping with last week), and the stuff associated with selling the house, arranging for an estate sale, etc.

The hard part’s done, and I expected to get back into some kind of routine starting this week.

Then yesterday afternoon I get an email from mom that my grandmother has aspirated and went to the ER and got admitted to the hospital for pneumonia and that it looked really bad.  So of course I delegated everything at work, packed in 5 minutes, and came on up here.  She’s currently stable and on one of those forced breathing mask dealies, which is hella uncomfortable and she therefore keeps trying to take off.  But her oxygen levels are up, so that’s positive.  Beyond that we’re not really sure what will happen. My uncle took the night shift.  I’m on day duty trying to do some kind of lecture writing and telecommuting for work from my laptop.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and prayers.  I’ll keep y’all posted.

  1. Sorry about your grandmother. It’s rough on the whole family when stuff like this happens. Remember to take care of yourself, too, while you’re looking out for the others. 🙂

  2. Oh, Kait, I’m so sorry! You know I understand what you’re going through, since I just went through all that stuff with my mom. I’ll say prayers for your grandma and your family. Hang in there.
