My Latest Obsession: Hart of Dixie

I don’t often watch TV apart from the stuff my husband and I watch together.  Mostly it’s a lack of time issue.  Limited free time that has to be split between writing and reading and other stuff.  So I don’t end up watching stuff unless I get unexpected free time–AKA sick days.  Usually my go to for sick days is period drama.  Last year it was Downton Abbey.  I still haven’t braved starting this season yet (A POX ON THE END OF SEASON THREE).  Anyway, as Susan absolutely FORBADE me from writing any prose for at least two days after the Jane Austen fest I was having, I decided to shift over and give something more modern a try after revisiting Sense and Sensibility.  So I queued up Hart of Dixie.

I did not have high hopes.  It’s set in Alabama.  Deep South.  That’s my next door neighbor state.  I was expecting terrible accents, lots of inaccuracy, farce, and that I wouldn’t last beyond two episodes.  Well, by the end of two episodes, I had to know how long it took George Tucker the cute lawyer to ditch the southern Stepford belle fiance.  By the fifth episode I was completely and totally hooked.  I’ve only seen two truly WRONG characterizations of the South (absolutely NOWHERE in the Deep South is it STUFFING.  It’s DRESSIN’.  Always.  And I don’t remember the other one).   I have now blown through all of season 1.

I mean, yeah, some of the accents are bad.  And there’s some fun-poking at the South and small towns.  But somebody among the writers has spent some time in the South.  That makes me really happy because I’m super picky about the portrayal of the South.  The characters are interesting and with each episode, new layers are added.  I love that in a show.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go watch more of my crack.

What about you?  Are you a Hart of Dixie fan?

  1. OH GAWD DA SSN 3-NO NO NO!!! KAAAAAAAAAHNNN!!!

Ahem. Now I’ve gotten that out of my system, I’ll queue up Hart of Dixie in an effort to recover. Glad you’re feeling better! 🙂

  2. I started watching Hart of Dixie when it began after Tiffany White got me hooked on the CW network with The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle. LOL It is a really cute show. Candace Havens raved about it at DFW 2 years ago. I use to twitter chat with her about Wade all the time. LOL
